Are you or a loved one suffering from unsightly varicose veins? Women, people who are obese, and smokers tend to develop this unwelcome condition more than the general population. Although the condition is usually harmless, varicose veins are usually considered to be undesirable by the unfortunate sufferer. At Huntington Women’s Health we offer varicose veins treatment to help ease the appearance and discomfort associated with this condition.
Varicose veins can be treated using a variety of procedures. The precise type that you or your loved one requires will depend upon the severity of the condition and the recommendations of your physician.
Varicose Veins Treatment: Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a method of removing varicose veins that has been used since the 1930s and also helps with spider veins. The procedure involves the injection of a salt or chemical solution that irritates the varicose vein, causing it to collapse. After the vein has been scarred and collapsed, your body absorbs it and reroutes the blood it once contained into neighboring blood vessels.
The best candidates for sclerotherapy are not currently pregnant or have a history of blood clots. Your eligibility for a sclerotherapy procedure is dependent upon the general health of the treatment area and the reason for any clotting.
A sclerotherapy procedure is fairly straightforward. We first inject a special solution into the varicose vein using an extremely fine needle. We can perform your sclerotherapy procedure in our office, which typically takes around half an hour. The number of veins requiring injections is based upon the location and size of the varicose veins and your overall medical condition.
You should refrain from taking certain medications before your varicose veins treatment. Be sure to tell us about any and all medications that you are taking, including over-the-counter medications, nutritional supplements, and herbs. Pay particular attention to any product that acts as a blood thinner, as this may increase the risk of uncontrolled bleeding.
Varicose Veins Treatment: Endovenous Laser Treatment
Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is the treatment of choice for larger varicose veins. It involves the use of a laser that transmits targeted thermal energy to heat varicose veins from within. The varicose vein response to an EVLT treatment by quickly collapsing and gradually disappearing. As with sclerotherapy, the blood once contained by the varicose vein will be absorbed by nearby blood vessels.
If you qualify as a candidate for EVLT, we will use ultrasound to determine the function of your veins. The procedure itself involves the delivery of a local anesthetic and the insertion of a catheter into the varicose vein. A laser probe will be inserted into this catheter, allowing us to use ultrasound for catheter placement.
After the laser has been activated, thermal energy will cause the varicose vein walls to collapse and disappear.
EVLT procedures typically take around one hour and are performed on an outpatient basis in our office. Patients normally are able to resume their daily activities immediately after their procedure unless it involves long car trips or flying.
